I have been rewarded with leadership opportunities, have engaged in panels and mentored teachers through the Asia-Europe Foundation and I am excited to be involved in this year's Empowered Ed Project. I was fortunate to participate in a workshop led by Ruben Puentedura on the concept of "Black Swan" events, as popularised by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. Ruben described high-impact, low-probability occurrences that are unpredictable and often rationalised only in retrospect and he provoked some serious thought which galvanised me to create this short course to engage educators in this critical conversation. Recent global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and emergence of digital disruption through generative AI and Chat GPT have underscored the need to move beyond traditional risk assessment models. We need to equip ourselves and our students with the skills to navigate profound uncertainty and embrace ambiguity. Traditional education systems often focus on predictable outcomes and established knowledge, leaving students and educators ill-prepared for the disruptive nature of these events. This course aims to address this gap by providing a framework for understanding and preparing for Black Swan events, fostering a culture of preparedness and proactive problem-solving.
In an increasingly interconnected and volatile world, the ability to anticipate, adapt, and respond to unforeseen disruptions is crucial. This course is designed to:
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills: Participants will learn to analyse complex information, identify potential risks, and develop contingency plans.
Foster resilience and adaptability: By exploring real-world scenarios, participants will cultivate the capacity to navigate uncertainty, embrace ambiguity, and adapt to changing circumstances.
Promote interdisciplinary learning: Black Swan events often transcend disciplinary boundaries, requiring a holistic understanding of various fields.
Empower teachers as facilitators of preparedness: Teachers will gain the knowledge and tools through complex discussions and foster a culture of proactive problem-solving.
Prepare for an unpredictable future: The course will work toward equipping participants with the skills necessary to thrive in a world characterised by rapid change and unexpected disruptions.
This course will cover:
Defining and understanding Black Swan events: Exploring the characteristics and impact of these events.
Identifying potential Black Swan scenarios: Analysing historical events and exploring potential future disruptions across various domains (e.g. technology, environment, economics, education).
Developing strategies for risk assessment and mitigation: Learning to identify vulnerabilities and develop contingency plans.
Cultivating resilience and adaptability: Exploring psychological and practical strategies for navigating uncertainty and change.
Applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills: Engaging in simulations to analyse complex scenarios and develop effective responses.
Ethical considerations: Analysing the ethical implications of Black Swan events and the responsibilities of individuals and institutions.
Community Preparedness: Discussion on how to apply these concepts to strengthen communities.
