Listening skills are important and students need to be able to actively listen and be able to unpack meaning. Dictation, while a traditional and often overlooked activity, gives students the practice of listening and writing what they hear. In the dictation activities below which were created for an English Communications class, students have control and can go back and re listen to the passage which means that they can move at their own pace. They also learn to track and identify spelling errors. It isn't an easy task but by making recordings, teachers can flip the classroom and more gainfully use their time with their students. Listening is an essential skill for life but like all skills, needs practice.
